Website Design & Development FAQ's
Website Design & Development – Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the most common questions about website design and development. I hope this helps to provide some clarity around the do’s and don’ts, benefits and necessities of website design and development.
A host company is where your website goes LIVE. Once your site is ready to reach the world, you will need a host company to load it up to. There are hundreds and thousands of host companies around the world, so choosing a good one can be daunting. It is really important to choose a host company that can load your site quickly, is trusted and secure. I use Siteground.
A domain name is what comes after the www.yourdomain.com.au. It should align strongly (if not exactly) to your business name. There are many internet sites where you can check domain name availability..I use Netregistry.
So, you’ve made the decision to launch your business on the internet, but don’t know where to begin! Well firstly, congratulations! Secondly, it’s not as daunting as it might seem.
If you are starting a new business, there are some important steps that you will need to take before you even register your business name. It is critical to secure a business name that is available, easy to spell and pronounce, has an available domain and social media handles. The key here is to secure a name (one name) that can be used across all your digital platforms – for example: Swordfish Wine Bar – domain name is swordfishwinebar.com.au, Facebook Twitter and Instagram handles are @swordfishwinebar
I can walk you through the process to guide you, so that your digital world is streamlined and consistent.
Then, we start planning the content for your digital profile. I send you a Website Design Brief to complete – this is our road map for planning your website’s sitemp; pages (about, services, contact, etc), keywords, target markets, intention of the website (online sales, bookings, leads, information provider), email accounts, contact details and forms. This then is your foundation for creating your website’s content.
There’s no straight answer unfortunately. You can get REALLY CHEAP websites created by some extraordinary online wiz company for next to knicks…but does it function? Do you have someone that you can call to talk through any concerns? Can you add content and update content easily and affordably? Does your website rank? Do you have to pay ongoing for adwords just to get noticed on Google?
If you compare the cost to advertise in your local paper (let’s go a half page, somewhere before the real estate section), its going to sting you about $3k, it’s going for ONE week, it’s reaching an audience who don’t need you, haven’t necessarily searched for you or your business (versus Google..they’re seeking you out) and the potential reach is limited by the print run, junk mail restrictions, distribution areas. So, when you’re weighing up your advertising spend, the investment into a quality (I mean organically optimised to get you ranked right up there) website, it’s a no-brainer.
It’s definitely a “you get what you pay for” kinda world. There is no point in having a stunning website if it doesn’t rank on Google!
